Assuring reclamation of Washington’s permitted mines is a key responsibility of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Washington Geological Survey. The original Surface Mining Act passed in 1971 and was amended in 1993 to assure that every mine in the state is thoroughly reclaimed.

The Surface Mine Reclamation Program (SMRP) is part of the Washington Geological Survey within the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The program was created in 1971 after the legislature created the Surface Mining Act. The SMRP makes sure that all lands and waters within the state are protected and reclaimed after mining is complete.
Currently, Washington has several permitted metal mines, but only one of them is operational—the Buckhorn Mountain gold mine in Okanogan County, managed by Kinross Gold Corporation. The mines shown are by no means all of the metallic mines in Washington. The remainder of the mines existed prior to the Metals Mining and Milling Act was signed.
